The exhibition “Raphael, Titian, Rubens. Masterpieces from the Borghese Gallery at Palazzo Barberini” in Rome, running from March 29 to June 30, 2024, is a culturally significant event showcasing a unique collaboration between the National Galleries of Ancient Art and the Borghese Gallery. This exhibition symbolizes the strong connection between the artistic heritage of these two museums, offering the public a rare opportunity to view some of the most significant works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Raphael, Titian, Rubens

This event features fifty highly valued works, including masterpieces such as Titian‘s “Sacred and Profane Love,” Antonello da Messina‘s “Portrait of a Man,” Peter Paul Rubens‘ “Susanna and the Elders,” and Raphael‘s “Lady with a Unicorn,” to name a few. These works were temporarily transferred from the Borghese Gallery to Palazzo Barberini, coinciding with the renovation works at the Borghese Gallery. This move not only preserves access to these works during the renovations but also creates a visual and ideal dialogue between the two collections, enhancing the visitor experience.

The renovations at the Borghese Gallery are part of a broader modernization and conservation project funded by the PNRR. These works include improving the aesthetics and energy efficiency of the structure and interventions on some of the artworks themselves. During the exhibition, Palazzo Barberini also offers the public a chance to deepen their knowledge of the works usually exhibited in its rooms.

Francesca Cappelletti, Director of the Borghese Gallery, stated: “In carrying out significant interventions of the PNRR that will change the appearance of the Art Gallery on the first floor of the building, the Borghese Gallery, with an exceptional effort from all its staff, will never close and will remain open during the works. The exhibition at Palazzo Barberini will allow us to keep the Borghese Gallery’s heritage visible and establish relationships and resonances with another exceptional Baroque collection and another great museum institution.”

An interesting aspect of the exhibition is its ability to highlight the historical and cultural importance of two key figures from 17th-century Rome, Maffeo Barberini and Scipione Borghese, whose love for art led to the initial cores of their respective collections.

To facilitate public participation, reduced ticket prices have been introduced. For instance, purchasing a ticket for the Borghese Gallery allows visiting the National Galleries of Ancient Art at a reduced price. The exhibition also offers free admission days, further facilitating access to this extraordinary cultural heritage.

In summary, the exhibition not only celebrates the artistic heritage of two of Rome’s most important cultural institutions but also represents an event that showcases a rare and valuable dialogue between two world-renowned museum collections.
